Stem cell transplants and survivorship


Lucie Turcotte, M.D., M.P.H., recipient of the Cancer Detection, Treatment, and Survivorship Award will use Masonic funds to lay the foundation for a study on unique mechanisms of metabolic syndrome in pediatric cancer survivors.

The term "metabolic syndrome" describes a group of cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, prothrombotic, and inflammatory abnormalities that can individually or interdependently lead to cardiovascular disease.

Turcotte (at left in photo) and her team hope to look at the health of adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer who received hematopoietic stem cell transplants and, specifically, how their immune systems may have contributed to the development of metabolic syndrome.

The first step is to find participants from a demographic of survivors, who are often difficult to recruit due to responsibilities such as school, family, and work. The team is working to identify strategies that make participation easier and exploring whether a large-scale study is feasible.
