Spending a month in Monticello, Minnesota, and being immersed in the clinic with Dr. Joseph Mahoney was an invaluable experience!
The experience went far beyond just picking up the tricks of a seasoned pediatrician. It was a fabulous teaching environment and I was challenged to work on the important skills of a primary care doctor such as efficiency, anticipatory guidance, and dealing with uncertainty. With the welcoming nature of Dr. Mahoney, the staff, and the families, I felt like a part of the community. I loved going to work every day and having the privilege to care for children.
Ultimately, my experience on the rural pediatrics rotation confirmed my decision to practice in a smaller town after graduation. I would recommend this experience for any resident who is going into a primary care setting, especially those with plans to work outside of a metropolitan area. I am grateful to the Minnesota Masonic Charities for this opportunity—it is one that will make an impact on my career for years to come!
